SD ASA Meeting on Tuesday at 7pm

The San Diego ASA Chapter meeting for January will be this 7:00PM Tuesday, January 11, at the La Jolla Brew House. Members and other medical cannabis advocates are welcome. We are kicking off some exciting new campaigns this year. Come get all the news and find out what you can do to help change federal law and defend safe access here in San Diego!

At this month’s meeting we have two very special speakers joining us: Leo Laurence, J.D., and Ken Rogers, PharmD.

Leo E. Laurence, J.D. is a former deputy sheriff, and once served on the Biker Enforcement Task Force in the District Attorney’s office in San Diego. He holds a law degree and completed an unprecedented, four-year, post-doctoral study in appellate law at the California Court of Appeal in San Diego. While Laurence continues to work on confidential law enforcement matters, he currently serves as editor of San Diego News Service, is active on the National Committee on Diversity of the Society of Professional Journalists, and is a speaker for and member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP).

Mr. Laurence has been quoted as saying, “There is no credible evidence that smoking marijuana inevitably leads to the abuse of heavy drugs, like cocaine and heroin. People of all ages are smoking marijuana, and have been for decades. But all the billions involved have gone into illicit activities. If we regulate and tax it, the revenue would go a long way to resolving our chronic fiscal problems from state to local levels. People in law enforcement are NOT universally opposed to regulating and taxing marijuana”.

Ken Rogers, PharmD. is a retired pharmacist who will discuss:

  • Background on state and federal drug classifications? For example, over the counter vs. controlled substances.
  • What procedures doe a pharmacist follow when verifying the validity of a prescription?
  • What is required for a valid prescription?
  • What type of information is provided on a typical prescription bottle? Warnings, etc.
  • In addition to the information on the bottle do you provide additional information to the patient?
  • What are possible consequences of dispensing a controlled substance to someone without a valid prescription?
  • What is HIPAA?
  • Why are these rules important?
